Supporting Education for the Young People of Mazatlán

 What is Friends of Mexico?

Friends of Mexico, a registered non-profit Mexican Civil Association (No. FME9903242B8),  is dedicated to providing community services in Mazatlán and promoting understanding among people of all nationalities.  Since our founding in December of 1998 we have grown to over 300 members, and we continue to grow.  Our members are both residents and visitors who are joined by their love of Mazatlán, an interest in getting to know each other, and a desire to make a difference in the lives of young people.

  Our Statement of Purpose

  1. To offer activities, information, and services to the members of Friends of Mexico

  2. To contribute to the local community by providing educational opportunities to students in need through the Friends of Mexico Foundation

Children helped by the FOM Foundation at Sor Juana School

100% of every penny or peso donated to Friends of Mexico is spent on the needs of less fortunate students. No donated funds are used for administrative or other expenses, or for any other purpose. Our hard-working committee members donate not only their time, but also money for gas, phone calls, etc.  Other overhead expenses are covered by membership dues.

There are more than 160 schools in Mazatlán. At present, we are helping 6 of them by providing school supplies, and often much more.  We need your donations so we can help more of these young students achieve what they dream of and deserve - a good education.

 Help Wanted!!!

In order to continue providing assistance to the students of Mazatlán - and services to our members - we need your help!  No, we're not asking for money (although donations are always welcome).  We need something even more valuable: your time.  Experience isn't necessary, neither is the ability to speak Spanish.  More important is the desire to be a part of a growing community dedicated to helping students and generally having a good time in the process.

This January, the following Executive Board offices are up for general election:

  • President - "The president presides at meetings of the Association and Board of Directors, sets and publishes an agenda for said meetings, establishes and co-ordinates committees as required, represents the Association as required, and casts a deciding vote of the Board of Directors in the event of a tie vote."

  • Secretary - "The Secretary takes minutes of all meetings and prepares and distributes copies for the Association, assists the President in correspondence, and acts a voting member of the Board of Directors."

We're also looking for people to coordinate the following activities:

Monthly Meetings

Friends of Mexico (FOM) meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Los Zarapes Restaurant (formerly El Pueblito) on Ave. Cameron Sábalo.  Social hour begins at 9:00, followed by the meeting at 10:00. We share updates of current FOM activities and community events, and hear from a new and informative guest speaker each month (find out what's coming up!).  The monthly newsletter distributed at the meeting covers all this plus additional information.  There is a "cover charge" of $30MN (pesos) to cover the cost of coffee & juice, meeting place, and newsletter.  Or, for just $20MN (pesos) more, enjoy a full breakfast!
